How is internal corrosion of fiberglass composite repair different compared to external corrosion?

In a foreign research report, it was pointed out that offshore natural gas pipelines have more corrosion failures per mile than onshore gas pipelines, and 97% of the failures are caused by internal corrosion. Therefore, the need for proper repair and mitigation of internal corrosion is clearly important for offshore operations.

While the repair of external corrosion structurally reinforces the pipes and provides a corrosion barrier against further deterioration, internal corrosion is more complex. Fiberglass composites are not used directly for internal corrosion as they are used for external corrosion. However, fiberglass composites can still be effectively used to provide long-lasting internal corrosion repair. For example, CF-500 BD carbon fiber and 210 HT saturated resin are excellent options for repairing internally corroded or broken pipes through walls because it can provide permanent repair, long-term structural reinforcement, and curing at ambient temperature.
