Why do fiberglass products all require chopped strand mat?

In the fiberglass reinforced plastic industry, chopped strand mat is an indispensable main product. Whether it's the outer shell of wind turbine blades, lightweight components of automotive parts, or carriers such as bathtubs and shower trays, CSM plays an irreplaceable role in supporting the performance, quality, and efficient production of many FRP products.

Chopted Straight Strand Mat Characteristics: A Key Factor in Determining FRP Performance

Chopted strand mat is a non-woven felt-like material made by chopping and dispersing glass fibers. Its core advantages lie in three dimensions: wettability, flexibility, and uniformity. Compared to ordinary glass fiber cloth, the fibers of CSM are randomly and non-directionally distributed, completely eliminating the difference in strength between the warp and weft directions, ensuring overall stress balance in FRP products and preventing localized cracking.

From the perspective of CSM performance, tensile strength is crucial: excessive resin content leads to overly hard products, difficulty in construction, and waste of resin and other auxiliary materials; insufficient resin content results in loose glass fibers, affecting product strength. Emulsion-based chopped strand mat, due to the properties of its emulsion binder, offers excellent adaptability to hand lay-up processes. It is easy for workers to spread and cut, and produces less fiberglass dust, making it a common choice for small- to medium-batch production and custom parts.

Core Applications: A vital material covering multiple fields

1. Core carrier for hand lay-up processes: This is the most widespread application area for chopped strand mat. Hand lay-up relies on manual layering and resin impregnation. The soft texture of chopped strand mat easily conforms to curved surfaces, enabling seamless laying for complex bathroom fixtures and customized industrial parts, ensuring product flatness.

2. Lightweight reinforcing material: In automotive parts, wind turbine blade components, and other fields, chopped strand mat replaces some thicker materials, reducing product weight while retaining sufficient tensile and flexural strength, meeting the demand for lightweight yet high-strength products.

3. Corrosion and wear-resistant protective layer: When fiberglass products are used in chemical and corrosion-resistant environments, chopped strand mat can be combined with resin to form a dense protective layer, which blocks the penetration of acids, alkalis and water vapor, and extends the service life of the products. This is an important reason why other common reinforcing materials are difficult to replace.
