What is the most suitable temperature and humidity range for storing fiberglass products?

Fiberglass yarn (such as untwisted roving) and its products (such as woven fabric, chopped strand mat, etc.) serve as reinforcing substrates for composite materials. Their packaging and storage conditions are crucial for maintaining the physical integrity, processing performance, and final composite material quality. Proper packaging and scientific storage are essential to prevent fiber damage, avoid moisture absorption, and ensure stable performance.

I. Packaging Specifications (General Principles)

1. Winding and Shape Requirements: Yarn or fabric should be tightly and neatly wound onto a rigid paper tube or mandrel.

Surface Condition: There should be no folds, twists, or skewing. Ensure the fibers are flat and straight, avoiding localized stress concentration or fiber damage. For felt and blanket products, they should be kept flat and wrinkle-free.

2. Inner Packaging (Core Moisture-Proof Layer): Each roll of yarn, each roll of fabric, or each product (such as felt cut to specified dimensions) must be tightly wrapped and sealed with moisture-proof material (usually a PE plastic bag). This is the first and most important line of defense against environmental moisture and contaminants.

3. Outer Packaging and Transportation Protection

Inner-packaged products should be placed in sturdy cardboard boxes or wooden crates, or outer-packaged according to a safe and reliable packaging method agreed upon by both the supplier and the buyer, ensuring effective protection against collisions, compression, friction, and puncture damage during transportation, loading, unloading, and storage.

Pallet Stacking Restrictions: When using pallets for transportation, stacking height is strictly limited. The specific number of layers needs to be determined based on the product type, packaging strength, and pallet stability. The core principle is to prevent the bottom layer of products from deforming, crushing the core shaft, or damaging the packaging due to excessive pressure.

II. Storage Environment Requirements (General Core)

1. Warehouse Conditions:

Location: Products should be stored in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated dedicated warehouse.

Waterproofing and Moisture Protection: Absolutely avoid rain, water immersion, and water accumulation on the ground. The warehouse should have good moisture-proof and waterproofing facilities (such as moisture-proof floors and appropriate elevation).

Temperature and Humidity Control (Ideal Range):

Temperature: It is recommended to control it within the range of 5°C - 35°C. Extreme high temperatures may accelerate material aging (especially sizing agents); extreme low temperatures may cause condensation.

Relative Humidity (RH): It is recommended to maintain this between 35% and 65%. High humidity (>65%) is the primary threat, causing fibers to absorb moisture, severely impairing sizing agent performance (especially coupling agent activity) and interfacial bonding with the resin; while excessively low humidity (<35%) has less impact on the fibers themselves, it may increase the risk of static electricity.

2. Usage Environment: The product should be opened and used at room temperature and under dry conditions. Before opening, allow the packaging to equilibrate in the operating environment for a period of time (especially when removing it from a cold storage facility) to avoid condensation.

III. Storage Period and Management Recommendations

1. Optimal Use Period: It is strongly recommended that users use the product within 6 to 12 months of receipt. This is the critical window for ensuring that fiber performance (especially sizing agent activity and interfacial bonding potential) is at its best.

2. Long-Term Storage Management: If the expected storage period exceeds the recommended optimal usage period (6-12 months), ensure the outermost moisture-proof sealed packaging of the product remains intact. Do not open or damage the seal prematurely.

For products that have been opened but not used immediately, the packaging opening must be immediately and strictly resealed (e.g., tightly seal the PE bag opening with tape) to minimize moisture intrusion.

Core Principle: Prevent Moisture Absorption! Moisture absorption is one of the main causes of performance degradation (especially interface performance decline) in fiberglass yarn and products.

The Importance of Following Standards: Strictly adhering to the packaging and storage standards for fiberglass yarn and products aims to:

Protect Physical Form: Prevent physical damage (folding, crushing, abrasion) during transportation and storage.

Maintain Chemical Stability: Protect the wetting agent (especially the critical coupling agent component) from moisture corrosion through moisture-proof sealing, ensuring its effective bonding and bridging function in composite material manufacturing.

Guarantee Final Product Performance: Provide a fundamental material guarantee for producing composite material products with satisfactory mechanical properties, strong interfacial bonding, and reliable long-term durability. Therefore, manufacturers, logistics and warehousing providers, and end users must all attach great importance to and strictly adhere to the packaging and storage requirements for fiberglass yarn and products. This is a crucial and indispensable step in controlling material quality, achieving the expected reinforcement effect, and ensuring the reliability of composite material products. Different specific products (such as fine yarn, roving, cloth, and felt) may vary slightly in packaging form (roll size, lining) or stacking details, but the core requirements of moisture protection, pressure protection, and damage prevention are universal.
