Chopped Strand Mat (CSM): The All-purpose Base Mat For Hand Lay-up Process

1. How is chopped strand mat manufactured?

The production process of chopped strand mat is relatively simple. Glass fiber strands are cut into lengths of 25 to 50 millimeters. These chopped fibers are scattered randomly and evenly onto a conveyor mesh belt, much like falling snowflakes. They are then bonded together with powder or emulsion binders, and finally dried and shaped.

The term "chopped" reveals its core feature: the fibers are short and randomly distributed, without the regular warp and weft directions seen in woven fabrics. This characteristic gives chopped strand mat isotropic mechanical properties, meaning its strength is nearly identical in all directions.

2. 450F: The Mainstay of Chopped Strand Mat Series

450F is one of the most widely used specifications of chopped strand mat. The number 450 stands for a weight of 450 grams per square meter, while the letter F indicates powder binder type.

As a medium-thickness grade, 450 g/㎡ chopped strand mat offers distinct advantages. A single layer can build up sufficient wall thickness, reducing lamination times and boosting production efficiency. The mat features excellent flexibility to closely conform to molds with complex curved surfaces. It also allows rapid resin impregnation and minimizes air bubbles during hand lay-up. Finished products boast smooth surfaces and superior appearance quality.

In Zaoqiang area, 450F is extensively applied to produce bathtubs, cooling towers, septic tanks, storage tanks and other products. It is one of the most familiar materials for workshop operators.

3. Applications of Chopped Strand Mat

Chemical Anti-corrosion: Acid-resistant storage tanks, reaction kettles, pipelines and chimney liners. Thanks to its randomly oriented fibers that bear loads evenly in all directions, combined with the corrosion resistance of resin, it serves as an ideal reinforcement material for chemical anti-corrosion equipment.

Building Materials & Sanitary Ware: Bathtubs, shower trays, cooling towers and purification tanks. Its outstanding conformability works perfectly for products with intricate shapes and numerous curved surfaces.

Transportation: Truck cab roofs, fairings and van bodies. Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) is lighter and rust-proof compared with steel plates. With cost advantages, chopped strand mat is a common choice for commercial vehicle exterior parts.

Shipbuilding: Fishing boats, yachts and lifeboats. Hulls require overall structural strength and resistance to seawater corrosion. Used together with woven fabrics, chopped strand mat balances structural performance and production efficiency.

4. Perfect Combination for Hand Lay-up Process

Chopped strand mat is generally used in combination with glass fiber woven fabrics in hand lay-up processes. The standard lamination procedure is as follows: first lay a layer of surface mat on the mold to form a resin-rich layer for enhanced corrosion resistance; then apply chopped strand mat and woven fabric alternately; finally add another layer of surface mat on the outermost side.

Chopped strand mat: Builds wall thickness, conforms to curved surfaces and provides isotropic strength.

Woven fabric: Delivers directional high strength and improves overall rigidity.

The combination ensures reliable mechanical performance of finished products, while keeping costs and operational difficulty under control. This alternating lamination method of mat and fabric is a proven technique adopted by China's FRP industry for decades.
