What are the characteristics and advantages of fiberglass composites?

(i) Excellent specific strength

Fiberglass composites are composed of fiberglass embedded in a resin matrix and have excellent specific strength, that is, they are light in weight but have mechanical properties close to metal. Taking the RQ-4 Global Hawk UAV as an example, its radome and fairing are made of fiberglass composites, which greatly reduces the weight while ensuring structural strength, helping to improve the flight performance and endurance of the UAV.

(ii) Corrosion resistance

The material is rust-proof and can withstand acid, alkali, moisture and salt spray environments for a long time, and has a longer service life than traditional metal materials. This allows low-altitude aircraft made of fiberglass composites to maintain good performance in various complex environments, reducing maintenance costs and safety hazards caused by corrosion.

(iii) Strong designability

Performance can be optimized by adjusting the fiber layup and resin type, and processed into complex shapes. This feature enables fiberglass composites to meet the special requirements of performance and shape for different components of low-altitude aircraft, providing greater flexibility for aircraft design.

(iv) Electromagnetic properties

Fiberglass composites are non-conductive and transparent to electromagnetic waves, and are suitable for special functional components such as electrical equipment and radomes. In low-altitude aircraft such as drones and eVTOL, this feature helps improve the communication and detection capabilities of the aircraft and ensure flight safety.
(V) Cost advantage

Compared with high-end composite materials such as carbon fiber, fiberglass is cheaper and is an economical high-performance material choice. This makes fiberglass composite materials more cost-effective in the manufacture of low-altitude aircraft, which is conducive to reducing production costs and promoting the popularization and development of the low-altitude economy.
