In April 2015, Canadian scientists developed an inexpensive and effective method to embed glass fibers in elastic rubber. This new material can be used to make winter non-slip shoes. The material is made of a rubber plastic called a thermoplastic polyurethane. Thousands of glass fibers are embedded in the rubber, such as tiny nails, making the rubber feel like a fine sandpaper.
