How to quickly identify high-quality fiberglass cloth?

I. Don't just look at the whiteness; check the uniformity of light transmission.

 

Many people mistakenly believe that the whiter the fiberglass cloth, the better its quality. This is a common misconception.

 

The color of fiberglass cloth mainly comes from the impregnating agent and subsequent dyeing. Many low-end products add excessive whitening agents to improve the appearance, which can actually interfere with subsequent resin impregnation and affect the overall strength.

 

The true core indicator is the uniformity of light transmission.

 

High-quality fiberglass cloth: Uniform yarn diameter (commonly 9-micron E-glass electronic yarn), stable twist, and soft, uniform light transmission when held up to a light source, without streaks, cloudiness, shadows, or uneven brightness.

 

Simple test: Lay the sample cloth flat on white paper and shine a mobile phone flashlight from above. Observe whether the transmitted light spot is uniform. Obvious bright streaks or dark areas indicate substandard yarn uniformity, which will cause uneven resin impregnation and reduce structural strength.

 

Purchasing points: Proactively request precise yarn parameters (e.g., EC9 75tex). Be wary of suppliers who only verbally claim good yarn but cannot provide parameters.

 

II. The feel can be deceiving; focus on checking the structure and edge details.

 

Misconception: Blindly pursuing a soft feel. An excessively soft feel usually indicates two problems: poor yarn quality and insufficient monofilament strength; or excessive softener added to the impregnation agent, which may make short-term work easier but will significantly reduce adhesion to the resin.

 

Simple Quality Inspection Methods

 

**Oblique Pull Test:** Gently pull the fabric at a 45-degree angle. High-quality fabric has moderate elasticity and can largely return to its original shape without collapsing or wrinkling. The pulled fibers are continuous and lustrous, and can last for tens of centimeters without breaking. Inferior fabric easily crumbles into short, powdery fibers.

 

**Inspect Fabric Edges and Cut Surfaces:** High-quality rolls of fabric have neat edges and clean cut surfaces with almost no loose or scattered fibers. Inferior fabric has rough edges and numerous broken or scattered fibers, indicating poor cutting precision or excessively brittle raw fibers.

 

**Magnifying Glass Detail Inspection:** Use a 10x jewelry magnifying glass (or a mobile phone macro lens) to check for excess white powder (due to inferior sizing agent flaking off) on the surface and the tightness of the warp and weft yarn intersections to identify hidden quality problems.

 

III. Fire Test:** Verify high-temperature resistance and material stability.

 

**The basic properties of fiberglass cloth should be A** Grade A non-combustible material, but non-combustibility does not equate to long-term performance stability. Differences in composition will cause variations in temperature resistance.

 

Inferior fiberglass: Low alumina content, unreasonable formula, lower upper temperature limit. It easily softens and collapses at high temperatures, smolders, produces odorous black smoke, becomes brittle and easily breaks after cooling, and ages rapidly over time.

 

High-quality fiberglass: Self-extinguishes immediately after being removed from the heat source, does not produce open flame or smoldering, and produces no obvious pungent black smoke. The burned area remains firm and retains its strength, exhibiting better long-term temperature resistance.

Simple practical test: Use a windproof lighter to burn the edge and observe three points: whether it self-extinguishes immediately, whether there is black smoke or odor, and whether the strength of the substrate remains intact after cooling.

 

Principle: High-quality formulated fiberglass can withstand temperatures above 600℃, while inferior products may only... At around 500℃, the lifespan will be significantly shortened under direct sunlight and high-temperature conditions.

 

Summary

When purchasing fiberglass cloth, one cannot judge solely by its whiteness and softness. The key is to check the uniformity of light transmission, the parameters of the raw yarn, the details of the fabric surface and selvage processing, and the high-temperature stability of the material. Confirming the quality of the raw yarn and the sizing agent is crucial to selecting a durable and qualified product.
