What Is Fiberglass Reinforced PP For Automobiles?

Recently, Borealis launched a new fiberglass reinforced PP product for automobiles, Borcycle™ GD3600SY, which contains up to 65% recycled plastic. It is reported that the material is mainly used for automobile interiors.

The new material is part of a range of mechanically recycled polyolefins for use in demanding applications. It contains 30% fiberglass, meaning that almost all of the matrix polymer comes from post-consumer recycled PP. The first industrial application of the product will be the centre console bracket for the new Peugeot 3008.

The product was developed to meet the requirements of the upcoming European End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation, which requires 25% of plastics used in new cars to come from recycled materials. Given that PP accounts for approximately one-third of automotive plastics, compounds such as Borcycle™ GD3600SY will play a key role in achieving sustainability goals.
